Exploring East Dry Run Valley…Wythe Gwen

What do you do on a beautiful summer day, and you're married to an avid fisherman?  You go fishing! On this particular day in May, we headed to East Dry Run Valley located just outside Speedwell, VA on route 14 in Jefferson National Forest.  A portion of East Fork Dry Run Creek flows through the valley.  This section offers  anglers a bit of a challenge, due to it being a compact stream with trees overhanging the water.  The area is well-shaded with hardwoods, Hemlocks and Pines, creating a cool climate to escape summers heat.  Since this is not a stocked creek, our hope was to catch some native Brookies, better known as native Brook Trout (char genus). Many years ago, when my hubby, Tony, was in his early twenties he would frequent the area, catching many Brookies.  On this day, he had no luck other than the occasional chub or shinner.  But as the saying goes, “A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.”

East Fork Dry Run Creek flows past Hussy Mountain Horse Camp.  The camp provides access to Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, which is an absolute jewel for equestrians!  While Tony tested his skills on the creek I explored this enticing trail that meanders its way through East Dry Run Valley. I love a good hike, however, after experiencing only a small section of trial I quickly realized why horse lovers from all over take advantage of the area…the trail system passes some absolute stunning landscapes.

After accepting our losses on the creek (no Brookies ), we hopped in the truck and continued to drive on Rt. 14. Along  the route,  I noticed there are plenty of parking spaces for vehicles and trailers.  Many of these spaces provide picnic tables, fire ring, horsestalls, and hitching rails.  East Fork Dry Run Creek parallels Rt. 14, providing visitors fishing and wading opportunities, plus a place to water horses.
If you are looking for a convenient place to escape into nature, I would highly recommend this area!  Although we didn’t catch any Brookies, it was certainly a nice area to appreciate Mother Nature!
East Dry Run Valley is located about 13 miles from Wytheville in Speedwell, VA.  Once in Speedwell continue on Rt. 21 south 3.2 miles to Forest Rt. 14 (C.C.C. Camp Rd.). Turn left onto Rt. 14.
